Be Yourself

If you’re paying attention, you might have noticed that it has been about a week since my last post. Well, I could blame this on a lot of things because…well….life. However, the truth of the matter is that I’ve been stuck. When I started up this site I made the claim that you provide the idea, and I’ll write the story, but here I have been struggling with one of my own ideas since last Sunday.

Last Sunday during the service I was stuck on the concept of how a fire will spread when given the proper fuel. (It was related to the message, I promise). So, I wanted to write this deep, inspirational, motivational, thing about how fire is a dynamic element, and how it is insinuated throughout human culture so much that it has even become a part of our language. Then describe that for a flame to grow it needs to be feed, and so it is with our faith. For our faith to grow and spread we have to keep feeding it through study, prayer, and commitment. Sounds good write? I thought so too.

Unfortunately, when I started writing I couldn’t work around to that connection. I sat and stared at my screen, looking for some way to keep it going. I would write whole paragraphs and erase them, and so the post sat, waiting for inspiration. Then, out of the blue, I got some advice. A marketing specialist that I had asked for advice came back and suggested that I narrow my focus. It’s all good to want to take any job, but if it’s not the way you think, it can make getting results difficult. But that once you find your niche, and you are comfortable with what you’re doing, it will seem natural.

Then to help emphasize this, my wife showed me a post about James Patterson doing an online class on Masterclass.com, and that he was going to pick one student to co-author a book with him. Immediately I was excited and intrigued, but then I looked at it and it specifically said that it was for a suspense or thriller novel. I looked over all the information and with a sigh said, “As good as this sounds, it’s just not my style of writing”. My wife agreed, but it still made an impression. If I’m going to do this, I’ve got to do it my way.

“To thine own self be true.” I have always loved that quote. Somehow I never thought I would need to be reminded of what it means.
